A lot of people light a candle (or turn on a wax warmer) because it smells amazing and instantly makes the room feel cozy and inviting. But when the product uses real essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances, those natural plant compounds are gently released into the air you breathe β€” whether you burn a candle or use a wax melt.

Here’s what happens: the warmth (from a flame or a warmer) releases the essential oil molecules into the room. You inhale them without thinking about it. Once they reach your nose, they travel directly to the limbic system in your brain β€” the part that controls emotions, memory, and stress responses.

Lavender is the most studied. Multiple peer-reviewed trials show that simply inhaling lavender essential oil reduces anxiety, lowers cortisol (stress hormone) levels, and improves sleep quality. A responsible note on safety: Any form of combustion (even from clean-burning soy candles) produces some particles and byproducts, so it’s never ideal to breathe smoke of any kind for long periods. That said, the beneficial essential oil molecules are still effectively released and inhaled during a normal burn. For those who prefer to avoid any combustion entirely, our natural soy wax melts are the perfect flame-free alternative.

Of course, balance matters. Short, occasional use in a well-ventilated room is considered safe and beneficial for most people. However, one population study found that very heavy daily exposure (more than one hour per day over many years) was linked to minor changes in heart rate, blood pressure, and lung function. That’s why we always recommend using any scented product responsibly.
