Black Walnut

Main page content

We don’t carry a product featuring Black Walnut just yet — what follows is its botanical profile, drawn from tradition and the research. Browse all ingredients →

The green outer hull of the black walnut (Juglans nigra) is a cornerstone of the traditional Western “cleanse,” classically combined with wormwood and clove as the well-known anti-parasite trio — hull and wormwood for the adult worm, clove for the eggs. The hull is rich in juglone, a naturally astringent, antimicrobial quinone, along with tannins that give it its dark stain. Native American healers and the 19th-century Eclectic physicians reached for it for intestinal worms and stubborn skin conditions.

Key Benefits of Black Walnut Hull

  • The third of the classic trio. Traditionally combined with wormwood and clove for a complete botanical parasite protocol.
  • Rich in juglone & tannins. The green hull’s astringent, antimicrobial compounds are what herbalists have always valued — and what give it its deep brown color.
  • A long folk record. Background on the tree and its chemistry at Wikipedia: Juglans nigra.

In the Traditions

Black walnut is a herb of Western and Native American practice rather than Chinese medicine. The Eclectic physicians of 1800s America used the green hull as a vermifuge and for skin complaints, and it became one leg of the popular three-herb cleanse still used by herbalists today. Its bitterness and astringency are, once again, the traditional signposts of a worming plant.

Human clinical data on black walnut hull dosing is limited, but traditional Eclectic and contemporary herbalist protocols consistently use a tincture of the green hull at 1–2 ml (approximately 20–40 drops) in water, taken 1–3 times daily for a short course of 2–3 weeks — never longer without practitioner oversight. Hull & McGuffin's American Herbal Products Association's Botanical Safety Handbook and the work of herbal researcher Susun Weed both document this short-term vermifuge use as the traditional standard. The hull is classically paired with wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) and clove (Syzygium aromaticum) in what practitioners commonly call the “anti-parasite trio” — hull targeting adult worms, wormwood disrupting their environment, and clove targeting eggs.

Black Walnut Hull Three-Herb Cleanse Protocol

  • Combine 1 ml black walnut hull tincture (green hull, alcohol-extracted) with 1 ml wormwood tincture and 1 ml clove tincture in a small glass of water or juice. Alternatively, take each tincture separately if purchased individually.
  • Take this combined dose once daily with the largest meal — food helps buffer the tannin load on the digestive lining and reduces nausea from the wormwood.
  • Run the protocol for no more than 2–3 weeks at a time, then pause for at least two weeks before repeating. Many practitioners follow a cycle of three weeks on, one week off, for two to three cycles.
  • During the cleanse, support elimination with adequate hydration — at least 2 litres of water daily — and consider a mild prebiotic food (raw garlic, leeks, or oats) to support gut flora between cycles.
  • Store all tinctures in dark amber glass away from heat and light; potency of the juglone-rich hull tincture is best within 12 months of production.

Research note: Most of the published evidence for juglone's antimicrobial and antiparasitic activity is in vitro (cell or lab-based). Robust human clinical trials on the full three-herb protocol are absent as of this writing — this remains a traditional use supported by historical practice and phytochemical rationale rather than randomised controlled trial data. If you are pursuing a parasite protocol for a confirmed infection, work directly with an integrative or functional medicine practitioner who can order appropriate testing and monitor your response.

Before you use this: Black walnut is a tree nut — avoid it if you have a walnut or tree-nut allergy. The hull is high in tannins and juglone; use short-term and in appropriate amounts, as prolonged high intake can irritate the digestive tract. Educational information about a traditional herb only, not a treatment plan — work with a practitioner you trust.
