Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is one of the oldest and most widely used medicinal herbs in the world, with documented use for over 4,000 years in Babylonian, Egyptian, Chinese, Greek, and Roman medicine. The name comes from the Greek "glykys" (sweet) + "rhiza" (root) — it is indeed 30–50 times sweeter than sugar due to its primary compound, glycyrrhizin. In herbal medicine, Licorice Root serves multiple critical roles: it is one of the best anti-inflammatory and soothing herbs for mucous membranes (from mouth to gut), a powerful adrenal tonic that extends the action of cortisol, an expectorant and bronchodilator, and a synergist herb that enhances the effectiveness of every other herb in a formula.

Licorice Root Soothing Respiratory Blend: 1 ml licorice root tincture in warm water with honey and lemon. Take 3 times daily during respiratory illness. Note: Use for no more than 4–6 consecutive weeks without a break. DGL (deglycyrrhizinated) licorice avoids hormonal effects and is safe for long-term use. Before you use this: Avoid with high blood pressure — glycyrrhizin raises blood pressure with long-term use. Avoid with heart failure, kidney disease, low potassium, or edema.
