Main page content

Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus), also known as Eleuthero, is a powerful adaptogenic root native to northeastern Asia. Unlike true ginsengs (Panax species), Siberian Ginseng belongs to a different genus but shares remarkable stress-resilience properties. Used for centuries in Russia and China, it became widely studied by Soviet scientists in the 1950s who documented its ability to enhance physical endurance, mental alertness, and resistance to stress. It is one of the most clinically studied adaptogens in the world.

Key Benefits of Siberian Ginseng

  • Adaptogenic — helps the body adapt to physical, mental, and environmental stress
  • Enhances stamina, endurance, and athletic performance
  • Supports adrenal function and reduces cortisol fatigue
  • Improves mental clarity and focus under stress
  • Boosts immune function and resilience
  • Contains eleutherosides — unique compounds not found in Panax ginseng

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Perspective

Cì Wǔ Jiā (刺五加) — Siberian Ginseng / Eleuthero has a well-documented place in the TCM pharmacopoeia, used extensively in northeastern Chinese medicine for over a thousand years. It is one of the few adaptogens that appears in both traditional and modern Chinese formularies.

  • Chinese Name: Cì Wǔ Jiā (刺五加) — "Prickly Five-Add"
  • Nature & Flavor: Warm; Pungent, Slightly Bitter
  • Meridians Entered: Spleen, Kidney, Heart
  • Key TCM Actions: Tonifies Spleen and Kidney Qi, strengthens sinews and bones, calms the Heart and settles the Shen (spirit), invigorates Blood and dispels Wind-Damp Bi syndrome, benefits the Qi and Blood.

In TCM, Cì Wǔ Jiā occupies the category of Qi and Yang tonics — herbs that build the body's fundamental energy reserves over time. Unlike Panax Ginseng (Rén Shēn), which directly and powerfully supplements Yuan Qi, Siberian Ginseng works more gently through the Spleen-Kidney axis — building the foundation from which all Qi is produced. The Heart-calming action is particularly important for the modern pattern of Xin Shen Bu Ning (Heart Shen Unrest) from overwork and stress — palpitations, insomnia, and anxiety from chronic exhaustion respond well to this herb.

Standard dose: 2–3 ml tincture in water or juice, 2 times daily. Best taken in the morning and early afternoon. Cycle 6–8 weeks on, 2 weeks off for optimal adaptogenic benefits. Pairs well with Rhodiola and Maca for enhanced energy support.

Before you use this: Avoid if you have high blood pressure, heart arrhythmia, or autoimmune conditions. Do not use during pregnancy. May interact with blood thinners and immune-suppressing drugs. Do not use with stimulants. Consult your healthcare provider before use.
